What Are Palatants?
A large number of commercial reptile foods (and most processed animal and livestock foods) contain palatants, sometimes called appetite stimulants or attractants. Their purpose is to make the food more tasty to the animals.
Common examples include:
• hydrolyzed animal proteins
• yeast extracts
• free amino acids
• animal fats or marine oils
These compounds release chemical signals associated with protein-rich food, which can strongly trigger feeding behavior in many animals. Even when the word palatant isn’t used, many common feed ingredients perform that role chemically.
Why are Palatants used?
Their primary purpose is to help ensure the animal takes that important first bite. Reptiles can have two healthy responses to novelty, one is to try the novel food, the other is to avoid it with caution. It doesn’t mean they don’t like the food, but they don’t always want to eat new diets.
By enhancing smell and taste, they can:
• increase first-bite response
• encourage reluctant animals to eat
• improve acceptance of prepared foods
Across animal nutrition, from aquaculture to pet foods, palatants are a common tool for improving the consistency of diet acceptance. In other words, they ensure the animals actually eat the food.
The Data Issue:
Most research on palatability enhancers comes from dogs, cats, livestock, and fish.
When it comes to reptiles:
• Controlled feeding studies are rare
• Long-term diet trials are almost nonexistent
• Many assumptions are simply borrowed from other animals
So while these ingredients are generally considered safe, the truth is that very little long-term research exists documenting their effects in reptiles. Much of that speculation is also very generalized. While for some herps those ingredients might be mostly benign, no Uromastyx, Chuckwalla, Tortoise, or many others would ever encounter any fish compounds.
In Herpetoculture, much of what we know still comes from careful observation rather than large controlled studies.
One thing is certain: I will not be using any of these ingredients in my foods. I am not comfortable with the potential trade-offs and downsides. I remain open-minded for when and if more data emerges, but for now I would be avoiding ingredients like these in all my animal diets.
